What if you could live your life over again?

In this text-based interactive fiction, you choose what happens next. Its in the style of pick-a-path gamebooks, but with over a thousand multiple-choice questions, its much longer and deeper than traditional gamebooks. Alter Ego starts at birth and ends at death, including two substantially different versions, depending on whether you choose to be male or female.

Will you grow up to be confident and happy? Will you fight with bullies, or befriend them? Will you find a date to the senior prom? Will you marry and have kids, or start your own business and become a millionaire? The choice is yours.

This game will change your life.

(Alter Ego was originally published in 1986 for the Commodore 64, MS-DOS, Apple II, and Macintosh. The current edition of the Alter Ego game is a production of Choose Multiple LLC. This edition includes an updated interface and fixes bugs in the original version of the game, but the content of the game hasnt changed from the original 1986 version of the game.)

Pros and cons of Alter Ego app for iPhone and iPad

Alter Ego app good for

Good game! Nice to play, but if possible to upgrade would be good: For example if you could see what you where doing instead of reading the text .
One of the best game experiences Ive had... Entertaining, didactic; will make you reflect on your own life. Gameplay-wise, its an interactive story, but very seamless. When you know that it is a game from the early 80s, you wonder what the Pete has happened to game designers since then.
Ive been waiting for this - thanks, Dan! This is an awesome port of one of the best games of all time: Alter Ego, the life simulation written by a psychologist, a timeless classic. With amazing depth and great replayability, and the beautiful looks of the iPhone adaptation, its my all-time favorite!
A fun point and click game for those who dislike typing. Sometimes tries harder to be educational than fun.
A must have game for anybody thier were even points in the game that gave me chills it is truly great
I loved this through and through, it has amazing replay value and is honestly worth the price! It works offline too so if you ever find yourself without wifi and youre bored you can play Alter Ego. I just cant urge you to play this game enough, you most certainly will not regret the game c:

Some bad moments

I cant update the app because it requires iOS 5. I think I might have to delete this app so that stupid update notification will go away :(
This is really just an exercise in gender stereotypes and sexism disguised as a text based role-playing game. There is little room for variables or for thinking outside the box. Its repetitive and lacking in combining choices -- which makes it a complete and utter rip off. AVOID!!
Pretty decent game, works without wifi which is nice. Its deep and at points it can be pretty dark. Only things I didnt like was the heteronormativity and the blatant sexism. Why cant you be gay? Homosexuality is addressed in the game, but only briefly and its kind of portrayed as a bad thing. That bothered me.
Want a game where you cant to anything cool with punishment then this game is for you
For the many frustrations Ive encountered while playing this game, its not worth $5 at all. There need to be some major improvements or a price drop at least. $5! For this!? First of all, the game comes off as very sexist. I played through both the make and female lives and it seems very different in a bad way. And why cant I propose as a female or ask my man on a date? Ridiculous. And when I finished college in each experience, with a major in natural sciences, the male character made $90,901 per turn and the female made $43,403, while both in the health services 2 career. Thats outrageously different. Besides that, you do not get to spend enough time at each stage of life. Id really like to be able to get through each icon and see all of the stories without having to play the game over and over. Its a cool game, but frustrating and it bores me after a while especially when I have to start a new life so soon. It would also be nice to be able to see a potential partners characteristics before committing to starting to date them. And it would be great if it wasnt always impossible to have a child. I always take up nearly my entire middle adulthood trying and I end up having to adopt when Im old. Also, I think the college experiences need to lay off all the romance when I already have a boyfriend. Maybe focus less on that and more on going to parties or working on assignments or something. All in all, I love this game, but it needs some change before Id believe its worth $5.
Very enjoyable. Bittersweet, as I got to look back and realize not all the good or bad that has happened to me was my own decision. After playing through once for free, I decided you were worth supporting! Please make more.
